How does a Minecraft MOTD work?

The MOTD (Message Of The Day) is the two-line text players see in the multiplayer list next to your server icon. It is your storefront: a colorful, tidy MOTD gets more clicks and more players.

You configure it in server.properties (the motd= line) or through plugins like ServerListPlus and proxy configs on BungeeCord/Velocity. Plugin configs use the & symbol (e.g. &6&lGold Bold), while the vanilla format uses §.

Most used codes

  • &l bold, &o italic, &n underlined, &m strikethrough, &r reset.
  • &#RRGGBB for HEX colors (Paper 1.16+, Spigot with plugins, BungeeCord).
  • Each line shows about 59 characters: anything beyond gets cut in the server list.
